The Ministry of Business of Business, Innovation, and Employment has launched the New Zealand Business Number (NZBN), a universal identifier which enables businesses to easily update, share key information, and interact with each other.
Government agencies will increasingly recognise businesses by their NZBN. The sharing of information between government agencies and businesses will also lead to improved data quality and help reduce rework for government agencies. Some agencies working regularly with businesses will be the first to recognise NZBN. This includes the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, New Zealand Trade and Enterprise, Callaghan Innovation, and Statistics New Zealand.
We were excited by the idea when it first started gaining traction in 2014. We’re passionate about supporting New Zealand small businesses, and we’ve been campaigning hard for a more streamlined partnership between the Government and small businesses.
Here’s what you need to know.
What is an NZBN?
Right now every company registered in New Zealand has an NZBN. By the end of the year business numbers will be allocated to other kinds of businesses including sole traders, charities, and partnerships. The NZBN will streamline all essential business information, and over time will become the only number businesses will need to use to interact with each other, the government, and its agencies. Eventually it will replace other numbers and each entity will only need to use their NZBN as their main identifier.
What is it used for?
Businesses will be able to update their core information (aka primary business data) in one place. This will then automatically update on other databases. The data and ways to access it will evolve over time, allowing businesses to spend more time growing their business, and less effort on administration.
How do I find mine (or another company’s)?
You can find any company’s business number by searching for the company on www.companies.govt.nz, and looking at the company details page. Companies Register users can use their NZBN interchangeably with their company number when searching or contacting our contact centre. New companies are allocated a business number at the time of incorporation.
