National Small Business Week is having an event in Denver today to honor businesses in Colorado. Not only do we know of a few Denver-based businesses that deserve recognition, we also have some insight as to why small businesses choose Colorado.
In the pursuit of happiness, Matt and Kelly Johannsen visited some friends in Denver and quickly fell in love with the city. Couple that with their drive to start a business, and they were off.
“We both like to create things. One of the things that people always say is that if you do something you love, eventually you’ll be successful. Even if you’re not making a ton of money, you’re still have a ton of fun every day at work.”
That passion to do what they loved spawned Upstairs Circus, a bar where you can not only have a drink, but also pick from one of their 30 different projects like woodworking, leatherworking and jewelry making.
They want to expand to more locations across Denver and beyond. For them, scalability is the first thing they think about when bringing on tools.
“We need to scale eloquently without having to hire on a lot more people.”
To do that they’ve looked to the cloud for software. Bringing on Xero instantly saved them valuable time that they could spend on other parts of their business, or just enjoying everything Colorado has to offer.
In fact, according to the survey we did last year, the quality of life is one of the things that brings people to Colorado. Some other reasons Colardo is a great place for small business owners:
- 66 percent said Colorado offers a great quality of life
- 54 percent said that Colorado’s central location in the U.S. is ideal
- 47 percent said that Colorado has a supportive business community
- 25 percent said that Colorado is family friendly
