Whether starting or growing a business in 2016, Enterprise Nation founder, Emma Jones, offers 5 tips for success all year round.
1. Go Global
Consider 2016 as your year to look at new and international markets. There’s over a billion people online across the globe and many of them are looking for British made and designed products and services. Social media and powerful marketplaces have made it easier to connect with customers across borders. Plus, there’s support on offer, including Enterprise Nation’s own programme of five trade missions throughout the year and content on how to effectively export. Not only does international trade increase sales, it also broadens horizons!
2. Embrace the web
Recent figures show that if the UK made the most of the digital opportunity, it would add an extra £92 billion to the economy. That’s a lot of potential! Ask yourself if you’re making the most of the web in the form of; digital marketing to reach new and existing customers, leveraging social media to attract new audiences, using email marketing to keep customers coming back, and running your business in the cloud so it can be run from anywhere, and on a budget. Get support on how to do this from attending events, learning online and making the most of free resources such as the Digital Business Academy and Google Garage.
3. Sell to government
With Minister Matthew Hancock committed to spending £1 in every £3 with small businesses, this is a great time to sell to government! Consider if you want to sell direct to government and look at Contractsfinder for the contracts in your sector. Or consider selling via Tier one suppliers who are the big companies like Microsoft, Fujitsu, Sodexo etc. They already sell to government and are required to increase the number of small businesses in their own supply chain. We think this is one of the biggest sales opportunities for small business in 2016.
5. Take advice
Across all these tips, you’ll need advice from experts and professionals. Find them on the Enterprise Nation marketplace, which is home to over 13,000 proven advisers. Research from the government’s Growth Vouchers programme shows companies that take advice are likely to grow at a faster rate than those who don’t. Focus on your greatest skill and strength within your business and surround yourself with experts and advisers who can guide on the other topics
5. Attend StartUp 2016!
For anyone starting out in the New Year, there’s only one piece of advice, which is to attend StartUp 2016! With events running in 10 locations across the UK on the same day (London, Birmingham, Peterborough, Farnham, Chiswick, Barnsley, Swindon, Shrewsbury, Burton upon Trent, and Horsham ) it’s a must-attend event for anyone considering becoming their own boss in 2016.
